Singh says budget will have money for dental care as NDP push for another GST rebate

OTTAWA — New Democrat Leader Jagmeet Singh says he thinks his party has more leverage to push for things it wants in the next federal budget, which is set to be released March 28.He says there will be money in the budget to expand dental care coverage to teens, seniors and people living with a disability, which was part of that deal. But he also wants to see the Liberals extend the six-month boost to the GST rebate introduced last fall.Singh says his budget priority is helping Canadians find ways to save money through rebates or other cost-of-living initiatives like helping fund school lunches for children. Singh says he’s not looking to end his party’s confidence and supply agreement with the Liberals.Nearly a year ago, the NDP agreed to support the minority government in key votes, including the budget, until 2025 — in exchange for movement on shared priorities. This report by The Canadian Press was first published March 14, 2023. MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The lines of attack in Wisconsin’s high stakes race for Wisconsin Supreme Court are broadening beyond abortion with three weeks to go in the contest that is already the most expensive election of its kind.Democratic-endorsed candidate Janet Protasiewicz, who initially focused largely on abortion, is now going after her Republican-backed challenger Dan Kelly over work he did for the GOP, critical statements he made on Social Security and other issues. Kelly’s backers are largely trying to paint Protasiewicz, a Milwaukee County judge, as weak on crime and unethical for speaking so forcefully in support of abortion rights. The winner in the April 4 election will determine majority control of the court, with the fate of abortion access, legislative redistricting, voting rights, rules for elections and other major issues at stake. The winner will also be in place heading into the 2024 presidential election in battleground Wisconsin. The court, currently co...Apple-Movies-Top-10

With work completed on the reconstruction of the Gardiner Expressway and millions of dollars spent, a potential mayoral candidate and various community groups want to revisit the budget and kill the project, framing it a byelection issue. The construction and rehabilitation of the Gardiner Expressway have felt neverending, with plans to continue the massive project along the eastern portion for the next few years. That includes rebuilding the section between Cherry Street and the Don Valley Parkway, a bit further north, as part of what was once called a “hybrid” option to free up space near the Port Lands.“We want to get the facts about the Gardiner. There’s still time to change and adjust course and work. What we’re lacking at this point are facts around the costs of the construction in terms of the ramps,” said Gardiner Expressway Transparency spokesperson Albert Koehl. The debate over whether the work should be happening dates back nearly a decad...Ohio State asks court to hear Title IX issues in abuse suits

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State University is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to consider questions about the law known as Title IX in a case that affects whether more than 230 men can proceed with lawsuits against the school over decades-old sexual abuse by a team doctor, the late Richard Strauss. The petition filed Tuesday urges the high court to hear the case and review two aspects: When does the clock start ticking on the legal time limit for filing Title IX claims, which in this case are about the university’s alleged “deliberate indifference” toward sexual harassment? And does the right to bring such claims apply to people who aren’t students or employees there, such as fans attending football games or visitors touring campus? The school argues the divided appeals court that revived the unsettled lawsuits against OSU reached the wrong conclusions on both elements.“Together, these rulings arm virtually anyone who has visited Ohio State over the past 40 years with a pot...Latest news
