US commitment to Ukraine a central question as Biden meets with EU leaders amid congressional chaos WASHINGTON (AP) — Saddled with a dysfunctional Congress, President Joe Biden has the task of assuring European Union leaders on Friday that the United States can nonetheless deliver on promises to send tens of billions of dollars’ worth of aid to wartime Ukraine and Israel. The Oval Office sit-down comes at a moment when domestic U.S. political chaos could further destabilize an increasingly chaotic world. Many of Biden’s shared priorities with the EU depend on getting a budget through Congress — a tough task given that the House lacks an elected speaker and differences with some Republican lawmakers over aid for Ukraine could force a federal government shutdown in November.Along with addressing Ukraine’s efforts to repel Russia and the fallout from Hamas’ attack on Israel, the U.S. and EU leaders are also figuring out how to manage climate change, economic competition with China and trade and tax issues. One day ahead of his meeting with Biden, European Counc...

Wild puzzled over phantom goal that turned tide in 7-3 loss to Kings With Halloween less than two weeks away, maybe it was fitting that the Minnesota Wild were undone Thursday by a phantom goal.Pierre-Luc Dubois scored twice in the last minute of the first period to break a 2-2 tie, the first of which he appeared to have kicked through Marc-Andre Fleury’s legs, and Minnesota never recovered in a 7-3 loss at Xcel Energy Center.“We’ve gotta be better at being resilient and not letting that get to us,” head coach Dean Evason.Connor Dewar, Kirill Kaprizov and Joel Eriksson Ek scored for the Wild, and Fleury stopped 21 of 26 shots. The Kings’ last two goals were empty netters after Evason pulled Fleury with more than 2 minutes to play. But it was Dubois’ first goal that seemed to turn the tide — he scored a second 12 seconds later to put the Wild down 4-2 heading into the first intermission — and the Wild still weren’t convinced Dubois didn’t kick that puck past Fleury.“I didn’t feel it hit my stick,” Dewar said. “I don’t know if it hit Brock (Faber’s), bu...

Avalanche shut down Connor Bedard, dominate Blackhawks en route to fourth straight win The Colorado Avalanche began the season with three wins on the road, including two victories against potential playoff teams, but several of them spoke of another level left to reach.Their collective effort Thursday night in the home opener against Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks might not have been exactly what they were alluding to, but it was a step in that direction.“We’re still fine-tuning our game, no question, but I think the guys are getting to know each other and like each other and that goes a long way for our culture and everyone understands the high expectations,” Avs coach Jared Bednar said. “We’re getting there. It’s a lot of fun to play that way, when you’re on the attack for most of the night and you do the right things on the checking side so you can get back on the attack.”The Avs shook off a sluggish few minutes in the first half of the first period and then crushed the rebuilding Blackhawks in a game that o...

Nuggets preseason finale takeaways: Bones Hyland revenge game accentuates transition defense troubles, but Denver finishes with a win LOS ANGELES — The Nuggets defeated the Clippers 103-90 in their preseason finale Thursday night with the starters playing into the second half. Los Angeles rested its starters after playing them Tuesday. Here are three takeaways from the win.Bones on a missionThe Nuggets somewhat unwittingly allowed this to turn into the Bones Hyland revenge game for a bit … until he had to be helped off the court with a leg injury with 5:36 remaining in the third quarter, anyway. Before tip, Michael Malone called Denver’s transition defense “embarrassing” in the first Clippers game, which he watched remotely. Hyland compounded the problem a few times, buzzing from end to end with the audacity of his new teammate Russell Westbrook. A number of Nuggets struggled to cover him when he had the ball. Malone called a timeout, fuming, in the second quarter after one of Hyland’s easy transition buckets off a Denver miss. The ex-Nugget shot 10 for 15 with 25 points, seven rebounds...

Kraken win for the 1st time in 5 games this season, beating Hurricanes 7-4 SEATTLE (AP) — It took five games, but the Seattle Kraken finally broke out offensively using a familiar formula that led to their success a season ago. Vince Dunn and Oliver Bjorkstrand each had a goal and two assists and the Kraken won for the first time this season, beating the Carolina Hurricanes 7-4 on Thursday night.Yanni Gourde, Jaden Schwartz and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare scored in a three-goal first period for the Kraken. But after going winless in its first four games and earning only one point in the standings, Seattle rediscovered what led to 100 points last season — a lot of contributions throughout the lineup. Seattle’s seven goals came from seven players and 13 picked up at least a point. The sluggish start was based around a lack of scoring as the Kraken managed just three goals through the first four games. But they felt they were on the cusp of a breakout and it finally arrived. “It’s our depth. It’s tough to play against that,” Seattle’s Jar...
