(KTLA) - The California city of Ojai is now the first city in America to recognize the legal rights of a nonhuman animal. The Ojai City Council voted to adopt the ordinance introduced by Councilmember Leslie Rule (District 1) and developed with the Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP) by a vote of 4-1 on Tuesday night. The ordinance defines and protects elephants’ rights to liberty, NhRP said in a press release. “It’s indisputable that elephants suffer when deprived of their freedom and that animal welfare laws can’t end their suffering,” said NhRP Director of Government Relations and Campaigns Courtney Fern. “For elephants and the nonhuman animal rights movement, we are proud to support this first-of-its-kind ordinance and we commend the Ojai City Council for standing up for what is necessary and just.” California official submits proposal to have new national monument near Joshua Tree National Park Elephants have been found to be quite similar to humans; they are ...State police investigating fatal Johnstown crash

JOHNSTOWN, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- New York State Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash out of Johnstown that happened Wednesday. Police say Salvatore Attigliato, 29, of Gloversville, was pronounced dead at the scene. Get the latest news, weather, sports and entertainment delivered right to your inbox! Police say the crash took place around 6:48 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of County Highway 122 and State Route 29A in Johnstown. Police say a motorcycle was traveling eastbound on State Route 29A when a car turned onto State Route 29A westbound from County Highway 122, striking the driver. ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. -- A man was killed near the intersection of Winkler Drive and Kappel Drive Thursday morning. Police were called to the location at around 7:30 a.m. after an alert from a ShotSpotter device. They found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was declared dead at the scene. A woman crossing Chambers Road in Aurora Wednesday night died after a driver hit her with a car.The crash happened near Chambers Road and Pheasant Run Parkway, Aurora police reported at 11:17 p.m. on X.#APDAlert Officers are responding to a fatal vehicle vs. pedestrian crash on S. Some type of chemical leak at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson sent two school workers to the hospital Thursday morning. Emergency crews were sent to the campus located at 1000 E. Victoria St. around 1:30 a.m., a Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesperson confirmed. A hazmat crew was called to CSU Dominguez Hills on Sept. 28, 2023. A new study has found that parking tickets are significantly down in Los Angeles, though some neighborhoods remain popular for parking enforcement.The nonprofit media outlet Crosstown LA analyzed Los Angeles Department of Transportation data and found that from January to August 2023, about 1.17 million parking tickets were issued, "a 17% drop from the approximately 1.4 million citations written in the same period last year."The city is on track to issue about 1.75 million tickets in 2023, down from about 2 million last year. Though fewer tickets are being issued, some neighborhoods remain targets of parking enforcement.Downtown Los Angeles and Westlake took the top two spots.
