(CNN) — The US House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to pass a bill to suspend the nation’s debt limit through January 1, 2025, as lawmakers race to prevent a catastrophic default. The bill will next need to be passed by the Senate before it can be sent to President Joe Biden to be signed into law. In the Senate, any one lawmaker can delay a swift vote and it is not yet clear when a final vote will take place. The timeframe to pass the bill through Congress is extremely tight and there is little room for error, putting enormous pressure on leadership in both parties.Lawmakers are racing the clock to avert a first-ever default ahead of June 5, the date the Treasury Department has said it will no longer be able to pay all of the nation’s obligations in full and on time, a scenario that could trigger global economic catastrophe. The debt limit bill faced backlash from the far right and the far left, but in the end it passed the House by a wide marg...

Mark Canha wants to stop turning his head when he’s swinging a bat. But he made heads turn all over Citi Field on Wednesday with his home-run heroics. The Mets outfielder went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and drove in all four runs to help the Mets edge the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-1, and take a key series from their NL East foes.Canha hadn’t hit a home run since May 3 and had struggled to match his production from last season. The Mets had given him days off in recent weeks as he worked in the cages to tweak his swing. He was confident that a turnaround was coming, and this game could have been the start of that. With the Mets (29-27) down 1-0 after Edmundo Sosa’s home run in the top of the third, Canha hit one out of the park to give the Mets a 2-1 lead. He drove in two more with a single in the fourth and Carlos Carrasco and the bullpen made the lead stand up.Carrasco (2-2) seems to have turned a corner after a dismal start to the season and an injured list stint ...

By THOMAS BEAUMONT and WILL WEISSERT (Associated Press)SALIX, Iowa (AP) — Ron DeSantis blitzed through Iowa during his first full day of presidential campaigning on Wednesday, aiming for the kind of personal connections with voters that critics say have long eluded him while stepping up his verbal swipes at former President Donald Trump. The Florida governor packed in four appearances that took him to cities, rural locales and the conservative heartland following his glitch-filled online campaign kickoff last week. The first was to the floor of Port Neal Welding in Salix, a rural town near Sioux City, where the nearby highway was lined with metal structures including a towering Jesus, a version of the Statue of Liberty and the Minions. DeSantis also hit Council Bluffs and Pella before concluding his day in Cedar Rapids. All that came after a Tuesday night appearance in the state capital, Des Moines. He didn’t take audience questions — usually a staple at Iowa presi...
