Boston to remove sex, gender identification from marriage licenses

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 07:13:30 GMT

The City of Boston is stripping sex and gender identification from marriage licenses, a measure aimed at providing a more inclusive experience for residents whose identities have historically been ignored by the government.Gender markers will be included upon request, but otherwise, marriage certificates will be issued without a couple’s identifying information, the Wu administration announced at a Tuesday press conference.“For people like me, the marriage certificate’s outdated and narrow gender markers were a glaring reminder that our city still had a long way to go to acknowledge our existence,” said Kimberly Rhoten, a non-binary resident who works in the mayor’s office of returning citizens.“They were a subtle, yet powerful message that our love, our relationships, and our identities were somehow less valid and less recognized underneath the eyes of the law and the City of Boston. Today, by removing gender markers, we actually alleviate dysphoria for many in our community.”Those...

TRUMBULL, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut man says it felt like he won the lottery when he discovered a bag with nearly $5,000 in cash lying in a parking lot. So, he decided to keep it.Three months later, he has been charged with larceny. It turns out the bag, which Trumbull Police said was clearly marked with a bank’s insignia and found outside the same bank, contained cash from the town’s tax department. There were also “numerous documents” inside identifying the rightful owner of the cash as the town of Trumbull, police said. The man, Robert Withington, 56, of Trumbull, contends he didn’t steal the money and didn’t notice anything inside the bag indicating who the owner was.“It’s not like this was planned out,” Withington told Hearst Connecticut Media. “Everything was in the moment and it was like I hit the lottery. That was it.”The Associated Press on Tuesday left a message seeking comment on Withington’s business cell phone. Other numbers listed for Withi...

Myon Burrell, who was sent to prison for life as a teen but set free in 2020, is arrested

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Myon Burrell, who was sent to prison for life as a teenager but was set free after 18 years behind bars, was arrested in a Minneapolis suburb Tuesday after police said they found a handgun and drugs in his SUV. Burrell, now 37, was released in 2020 after Minnesota’s pardons board commuted his sentence in a high-profile murder case. The Black man’s prosecution and harsh punishment raised questions about the integrity of the criminal justice system that put him away for the death of a young girl killed by a stray bullet. The Associated Press and APM Reports in 2020 uncovered new evidence and serious flaws in the police investigation, ultimately leading to the creation of an independent national legal panel to review the case. The Robbinsdale Police Department said in a news release that an officer on routine patrol Tuesday spotted an SUV veering out of its lane and followed it. The SUV continued to drive erratically, above the speed limit, and went over ...
