Texas Tech hires coach Grant McCasland after NIT title

Grant McCasland was hired as Texas Tech’s new coach Friday, getting a six-year contract with the Red Raiders a day after North Texas won the NIT title to wrap up that school’s first 30-win season.North Texas was 135-65 in six seasons under McCasland, who has a master’s degree from Texas Tech. The Mean Green were 31-7 this season, which came a year after they had first broken the school record by winning 25 games.During his time on the Lubbock campus while getting his master’s degree, McCasland served as Texas Tech’s director of basketball operations for coach James Dickey from 1999-2001. “The commitment and vision for Texas Tech has no limits and we look forward to loving our team everyday with a greater purpose,” McCasland said in a statement Friday. The daughter of a former director of national intelligence has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for fatally stabbing her longtime friend in 2020.In January, 29-year-old Sophia Negroponte was found guilty of second-degree murder in the killing of 24-year-old Yousuf Rasmussen, of Bethesda.Prosecutors said Negroponte — the daughter of John Negroponte, the first director of national intelligence and a former United Nations ambassador during the George W. JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) -- A brush fire has sparked off Interstate 70 in Jefferson County, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said. Pre-evacuations have been issued for the Morrison area that lies east of Highway 8 south to U.S. 285.The sheriff's office said the fire is burning along the hogback south of I-70 and that smoke is visible in the area of I-70 and C-470. DENVER (KDVR) -- Crime happens everywhere in Denver, but the most common and most dangerous types continue to be concentrated in certain neighborhoods. Denver clocked nearly 1,300 crimes in the week between March 22 and March 29. Nearly half of Denver crime in 2023 is vehicle-related Vehicle-related crimes were the most common type, of which around one-third of the week's crime was either auto thefts or thefts from a motor vehicle. Crimes such as trespassing, disturbing the peace, violations of court orders and weapons possession are the next most frequent.Auto thefts alone were 17% of the week's crime. Thefts from vehicles were another 15%. Certain crimes are worse issues in certain places. The driver of a box truck was killed after, police said, they were involved in a crash with a Miami Police vehicle that sent two officers to the hospital and led to several street closures.City of Miami Police units arrived at the scene of the crash at the intersection of Northwest 28th Avenue and 25th Street, early Friday afternoon. 7Skyforce hovered above the scene where the truck lay on its side. A dark colored car is seen smashed underneath with its airbag deployed. A man accused of an antisemitic attack in Dania Beach has been charged with a hate crime.Prosecutors said Tevin Grant attacked a man because of the victim’s religion.The attack happened along Stirling Road, Feb 7.According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Grant hurled an antisemitic slur and punched the victim, who was speaking Hebrew on his phone while riding a bicycle.Grant has also been charged with aggravated assault.Family of 26-year-old killed by hit-and-run driver speaks out

Emergency crews in Lynn spent Friday afternoon working to put out a stubborn fire that burned through several vehicles and spread to at least two homes on Chestnut Street, displacing ten people.The Lynn Fire Department said personnel were called to the area of 109 Chestnut Street on Friday afternoon where they found a 2-alarm fire burning upon arrival.Around 1:40 p.m., a SKY7 camera spotted firefighters working to put out flames that had burned through what appeared to be a box truck and a car.Both vehicles were tucked between two multistory homes that suffered serious damage.
