Escaped murderer Danelo Souza Cavalcante stole a rifle from a garage and fled a homeowner’s gunfire, authorities said Tuesday as police closed roads in suburban Philadelphia, told residents to lock their doors and set up a new search area in the nearly 2-week-old manhunt.Cavalcante entered the open garage late Monday in the search area northwest of Philadelphia, stole a .22-caliber rifle and ammunition, and fled when the homeowner who was in the garage drew a pistol and shot at him several times, Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens said at a news conference Tuesday morning. The developments came in the days after Cavalcante slipped out of an earlier search area to the south in Chester County, stole a dairy delivery truck, and went to the homes of onetime work associates in what police say is Cavalcante’s desperate quest for help.About 500 law enforcement personnel are now searching or guarding an 8- to 10-square mile area in a different part of Chester County...Health Canada approves updated Moderna vaccine for COVID-19

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland is losing large numbers of Ukrainian refugees from its workforce as they travel to Germany to seek higher wages and government benefits in the rich Western economy, according to a report published Tuesday. Although the refugees are not economic migrants, they are increasingly taking on work as the war in Ukraine drags on for more than a year and a half. Where they choose to live impacts labor markets in European nations, which are desperate for workers and are facing demographic declines due to low birthrates.Poland is not their first choice anymore, said Michalina Sielewicz, director of economic development for EWL, an employment agency that carried out the research along with the Center for East European Studies at the University of Warsaw. “We should be worried,” she said. But an economist cautioned that Ukrainian refugees cannot solve all of the labor shortages. Andrzej Kubisiak with the state-funded Polish Economic Institute said the greatest demand ...Apple set to unveil the iPhone 15. Here’s what to expect

Apple is expected to take the wraps off its next iPhone on Tuesday during what has become an annual late summer rite aimed at giving more people more reasons to buy the technology trendsetter’s marquee product. The showcase at Apple’s Cupertino California, headquarters comes as the company is mired in a mild slump that has seen its sales drop from last year in three consecutive quarters — with management signaling another downturn is likely during the current quarter that will be capped with the release of its iPhone 15 lineup. The malaise is a key reason Apple’s stock price has dipped by nearly 10% since mid-July, dropping the company’s market value below the $3 trillion threshold it reached for the first time earlier this summer. As has been case with Apple and other smartphone makers, the next model isn’t expected to make any major leaps in technology. The array of iPhone 15 choices, likely to range from lower-priced basic models to more expensive premium ve...McCarthy signals a Biden impeachment inquiry ahead, but first he must pass a bill to fund government

WASHINGTON (AP) — Speaker Kevin McCarthy is expected to endorse moving ahead with an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden as he faces mounting pressure from his right flank to take action with the House returning Tuesday for a disruptive fall agenda.McCarthy is planning to convene lawmakers behind closed doors multiple times this week, including for a meeting to discuss the Biden impeachment. The speaker also is struggling to pass legislation needed to avoid a federal government shutdown at the end of the month.“We’ve got a lot of work to do,” McCarthy, R-Calif., told reporters late Monday as he left the Capitol. The Republican leader is once again at a political crossroads — trying to keep his most conservative lawmakers satisfied and prevent his own ouster. It’s a familiar political bind for McCarthy, who is juggling the impeachment inquiry and the government shutdown threat with no clear end game.McCarthy has stopped short of announcing the launch of a Biden i...European Union to rush more than $2 billion to disaster-hit Greece, using untapped funds
