Abandoned crab, lobster traps targeted in new federal program

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 01:33:00 GMT

The U.S. government is launching a new program to combat the scourge of abandoned crab and lobster traps, which can dilute harvests and kill other fish in coastal waters from Maine to Alaska. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has chosen William & Mary’s Virginia Institute of Marine Science to anchor the program. The university announced Friday that NOAA is providing an $8 million grant to the institute to implement the project.Abandoned fishing gear is a worldwide problem that’s been referred to as anything from “ghost nets ” to the “land mines of the sea.” The lost equipment is often dislodged by storms or passing boats, but it still will attract and kill marine life.Industry experts and scientists estimate commercial fishermen lose about 10% of their traps per year to bad weather, strong currents and vessels that sever tie lines. A 2001 study suggested that ghost fishing kills 4 million to 10 million blue crabs each year in Louisiana alone. The NOAA’...

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 01:33:00 GMT

CHICAGO - As May approaches, Chicago's two professional soccer teams are well into the start of their 2023 seasons. It's one of change in a few ways for the Chicago Red Stars, who are taking the pitch for their fourth match of the season against OL Reign in Seattle on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. central time. After dropping their opening two matches of the season, first on the road at San Diego Wave FC and then at home to the Houston Dash on April 1, the club broke through for a 4-2 win over the Kansas City Current last Saturday. One of the major storylines early, however, has been a major injury to one of their top players, forward Mallory Swanson. The two-time NWSL MVP finalist tore the patella tendon in her left knee with the United States women's national team against Ireland on April 9 in Austin and has already undergone surgery to repair it. She's expected to miss a significant amount of time with the Red Stars and perhaps this summer's Women's World Cup.Larry Hawley has more on how ...

BOULDER — The future for CU football looks so bright under coach Deion Sanders, Laviska Shenault said, he brought shades to the 2023 spring football game.“It’s somebody that’s got a lot of respect to his name. A lot of culture to his name,” Shenault, the former Buffs star and current Carolina Panthers wideout, told The Post before Saturday’s sold-out spring game at Folsom Field.“And I feel like this place needs a little — you need somebody with his type of, I don’t know how to say it, but his type of (rep), to be here.”With that, Shenault, who led FBS football in receptions per game in the fall of 2018 while playing for the Buffs, flashed a bright smile. One that matched the one worn by former CU teammate Davion Taylor, who sat next to him signing autographs for fans at the Buffs’ indoor practice facility an hour before the spring game.“I go around the locker room, I already tell them I’m taking all bets next year,” former CU linebacker Davion Taylor, currently wit...

My dad’s birthday was Wednesday and we went to the Rockies’ 14-3 loss to Pittsburgh at Coors Field. He said: “Pick something else next year.”Matt, in Dad’s doghouseKiz: The staff here at Kickin’ It Headquarters is here to help with birthday suggestions for your father that he might find more enjoyable than watching the Rockies. How about breakfast, lunch and dinner at the Department of Motor Vehicles? Or maybe find a 2-for-1 deal on a father-and-son bikini wax?Not hyperbole: There’s no way the Rocks can match Cleveland Spiders’ 20-134 record in 1899. But, looking at teams in the modern era, can they “beat” the Detroit Tigers’ 43-119 record in 2003?Brandon, ThorntonKiz: I regularly receive angry emails demanding the Rockies fire manager Bud Black.
