El telescopio Webb detecta un agujero negro supermasivo formado hace más de 13.000 millones de años

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:12:39 GMT

Orioles to call up Grayson Rodriguez, club’s top pitching prospect, to start Monday vs. Dodgers: ‘Hopefully he sticks in the rotation’

Grayson Rodriguez is back. The Orioles’ top pitching prospect will be recalled from Triple-A to start Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, manager Brandon Hyde said Sunday. The corresponding move will be announced at a later time.Hyde said he was “very pleased” with the progress Rodriguez made in the minors after he was demoted in late May. The 23-year-old struggled with a 7.35 ERA in his first 10 big league starts, but he returned to dominant form with Triple-A Norfolk. In seven starts with the Tides since his demotion, Rodriguez posted a 1.69 ERA with 54 strikeouts in 37 1/3 innings — similarly impressive numbers to the ones he put up throughout his minor league career. His marching orders when he was sent down were to improve the command on his mid-to-high 90s mph fastball. Hyde said he’s achieved that.“The reports have been awesome with how the command has improved,” Hyde said before Sunday’s game versus the Miami Marl...

‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’ nets $80M in opening

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:12:39 GMT

NEW YORK — After a globe-trotting publicity blitz by star Tom Cruise, “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” launched with a franchise-best $80 million over five days, though it came in shy of industry expectations with a $56.2 million haul over the three-day weekend, according to studio estimates. The Paramount Pictures debut was boosted by strong overseas sales of $155 million from 70 markets. But while a $235 million worldwide launch marked one of the best global openings of the year, “Dead Reckoning” couldn’t approach the high-speed velocity of last summer’s top film, “Top Gun: Maverick.”“Dead Reckoning Part One,” the seventh film in the 27-year-old series, had been forecast to better the franchise high of the previous installment, “Fallout,” which opened with $61 million domestically in 2018. Instead, it also fell short of the $57.8 million “Mission: Impossible II” debuted with in 2000.T...

Ticker: Advertising on Twitter has dropped, Musk; UPS  training managers in case of strike

Elon Musk says Twitter is still losing cash because advertising has dropped by half.In a reply to a tweet offering business advice, Musk tweeted, “We’re still negative cash flow, due to (about a) 50% drop in advertising revenue plus heavy debt load.”“Need to reach positive cash flow before we have the luxury of anything else,” he concluded over the weekend.Ever since he took over Twitter in a $44 billion deal last fall, Musk has tried to reassure advertisers who were concerned about the ouster of top executives, widespread layoffs and a different approach to content moderation. Some high-profile users who had been banned were allowed back on the site.Twitter got a new competitor this month when Facebook owner Meta launched a text-focused app, Threads, and gained tens of millions of sign-ups in a few days. Twitter responded by threatening legal action.UPS  training managers in case of strikeUPS said it has started “business continuity“ training for manag...

Long the hottest place on Earth, Death Valley put a sizzling exclamation point Sunday on a record warm summer that is baking nearly the entire globe by flirting with some of the hottest temperatures ever recorded, meteorologists said.Temperatures in Death Valley, which runs along part of central California’s border with Nevada, were forecast to reach 128 degrees (53.33 degrees Celsius) on Sunday at the aptly named Furnace Creek, the National Weather Service said. The hottest temperature ever record was 134 degrees (56.67 degrees Celsius) in July 1913 at Furnace Creek, said Randy Ceverny of the World Meteorological Organization, the body recognized as keeper of world records. NEW YORK (AP) — Even during a year of sobering economic news for media companies, the layoffs of three Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonists on a single day hit like a gut punch. The firings of the cartoonists employed by the McClatchy newspaper chain last week were a stark reminder of how an influential art form is dying, part of a general trend away from opinion content in the struggling print industry.Losing their jobs were Jack Ohman of California’s Sacramento Bee, also president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists; Joel Pett of the Lexington Herald-Leader in Kentucky and Kevin Siers of the Charlotte Observer in North Carolina. Ohman and Siers were full-time staffers, while Pett worked on a free-lance contract. The firings on Tuesday were first reported by The Daily Cartoonist blog.“I had no warning at all,” Ohman told The Associated Press. “I was stupefied.”McClatchy, which owns 30 U.S. newspapers, said it would no longer publish editorial cartoons....
