AUSTIN (KXAN) – The Texas Department of Public Safety honored those lost in the line of duty throughout the department’s history at the 2023 Peace Officers Memorial Service Tuesday. The service was held at DPS Headquarters in Austin, with Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick serving as guest speaker. “There are constant reminders that law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day to protect their fellow Texans, and far too often, they make the ultimate sacrifice,” said Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, according to a DPS press release. “It is a privilege to join the Texas Department of Public Safety, one of the finest police forces in the world, to honor the lives of their fallen Troopers.”Texas Department of Public Safety holds 2023 Peace Officers Memorial Service. And they need protection.

Election officials used to toil in relative obscurity. Poll workers put in long, intense hours around voting time, filling low-paid bureaucratic roles that were poorly understood by the public they served. But since 2020, that world has turned upside down. Today, many election workers are the subject of harassment, threats and even acts of violence. Some have had to flee their homes or have been assaulted. One said it’s “like nothing I’ve ever seen.”The sudden vitriol stems from the Big Lie that the 2020 presidential election was stolen, which has metastasized in voting precincts nationwide. The result is as predictable as it is disturbing: All across the country, election workers are quitting in record numbers. In my own home state of Kentucky — hardly a battleground — about 20% of all county clerks opted to retire rather than run for reelection last year.Which raises an urgent question for 2024: Who is going to be left to work the elections?Consi...98.3 TRY Social Dilemma: Can You Tell Someone They Are Wearing Too Much Cologne?

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Today's 98.3 TRY Social Dilemma came from Douglas and it's about perfume and cologne. Here's his email: Get the latest, news, weather, sports and community events delivered right to your inbox! Hi Jaime. I have a problem. My wife and her sister are very close. We live within a few blocks of one another, and they are together at least four or five times a week for coffee or just to spend some time either at lunch or after dinner. That's fine with me. Personality wise, I love my sister-in-law. However, there is a big problem. She wears way too much perfume. It is overwhelming. When I come home I can smell whether she's been at the house or not. It lingers long after she's gone. And the smell is not one of my favorites. I want to say something to her, but my wife says it will hurt her feelings. So I asked my wife to say something, and she said she doesn't feel comfortable. I think I can't be the only one who feels this way, and it should come from someone who...Ask Amy: Messaging leads to romance, insecurity

Dear Amy: About two years ago, I messaged “Bradley” on social media. (We’re both gay.)I complimented him on some pictures he posted. He answered me, which led to steady messaging, which then led to phone calls. What impressed me was how often he took the initiative. I’d send a morning and afternoon message. The calls could go two or three hours, on a daily basis. He told me he’s shared more about his life with me than anyone else. After several months of almost daily calls and messaging I told him that I love him. He’s said the same to me. He really has become part of my life. We have talked about meeting.Recently, he got a job out West, which means a move from his home state in the East.I live in the Midwest. Now my insecurities are kicking in. There are going to be big changes in his life, with a move and a new job. I can imagine him meeting in person other guys he’s been in contact with.I came into his life during a lull because of the pandemic. He’s assu...EU will not rewrite contested nature law, bloc's green chief says

The European Commission will not redraft a landmark law to restore damaged environments, the bloc's green policy chief said on Monday (22 May), in the face of calls from some lawmakers to throw out the proposal.Brussels is attempting to salvage two proposed environmental laws, the future of which is in doubt after the biggest lawmaker group in the European Parliament called for them to be rejected. One law would require countries to introduce measures to restore nature in 20% of their land and sea. The second, designed to cut pollution and halt the collapse of Europe's bee and butterfly populations, would halve the EU's chemical pesticide use by 2030."We will not come up with another proposal, time simply isn't there," Frans Timmermans said of the nature restoration law at a European Parliament committee meeting.Timmermans said by improving the health of nature, the proposals would make Europe's farms more resilient to worsening climate change impacts like floods and drought, improve...Four-bedroom home in Los Gatos sells for $5.4 million

“I used to believe that truth is stranger than fiction,” Unlucky Louie told me. “Then I had to listen to the excuses my daughters concocted when they came home at three in the morning. After partnering Cy in today’s penny game, I’m back to believing.”Cy the Cynic plays the dummy like a reckless driver. At 3NT, East ducked the first heart, and Cy won with the ten. He led a club to dummy’s king and next a diamond to finesse with his queen. Ed, my club’s expert, was West and played low with an air of uninterest.DOWN ONE“The Cynic then led a spade to dummy’s ace,” Louie said, “and returned a second diamond to his jack. Ed produced the king and led the king and another spade, and East got the ten and queen and his ace of hearts. Down one. I saw it and still don’t believe it.”Cy went down at an icy-cold game. He can lead the ace of diamonds at Trick Two, then the queen. Even if East has K-10-x-x, Cy wins f...Grecia se encamina a nuevas elecciones luego de que los líderes de los partidos rechazaran formar un gobierno de coalición

BERLIN (AP) — German business confidence has dropped for the first time after a six-month rise as inflation recedes only slowly in Europe’s biggest economy and interest rates continue to increase, a closely watched survey showed Wednesday. The Ifo institute said its monthly index dropped to 91.7 points in May from 93.4 last month. The index had risen every month since November. Managers’ outlook for the next six months declined significantly, while their assessment of both their current situation was slightly worse than in April. There was a sharp decline of confidence in the manufacturing sector, where expectations saw their largest increase since March 2022, the month after Russia launched its war in Ukraine, Ifo said. The German economy stagnated in this year’s first quarter after contracting by 0.5% in the final three months of 2022, according to preliminary figures released earlier this month.Germany’s annual inflation rate stood at 7.2% in April, down from...Latest news
