Pac-12 tales of woe: Larry Scott’s jackpot, presidential incompetence and an epic fail all around

Published Thu, 27 Feb 2025 06:06:27 GMT

He’s going to hit 50, after all.Fifty million.Fifty million dollars. When the final check clears, former Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott will have collected $50 million from the conference over the length of a tenure that was second-rate at best and an abject failure at worst. In fact, Scott might already have the final dollar in hand.On Friday, the Pac-12 released its federal tax filings for the 2022 fiscal year. The document indicates Scott was paid $4.1 million for his final six months on the job, from January through June of 2021.That whopping total included a $1.5 million severance payment.Oh, but there’s more. According to the conference, the final installment of Scott’s compensation will appear on the tax filings released next spring, for the 2023 fiscal year, based on the separation agreement he reached with the Pac-12’s board of directors (i.e., the university presidents).Assuming the $1.5 million appearing on the 2022 filings represented half of Scott...

Police have yet to find the people behind that act.Vinícius, who is Black, has also been targeted by verbal racist attacks during games. JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A transgender girl in Mississippi is not participating in her high school graduation ceremony because school officials told her to dress like a boy and a federal judge did not block the officials’ decision, an attorney for the girl’s family said Saturday.Linda Morris, staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union’s Women’s Rights Project, said the ruling handed down late Friday by U.S. District Judge Taylor McNeel in Gulfport, Mississippi, “is as disappointing as it is absurd.”“Our client is being shamed and humiliated for explicitly discriminatory reasons, and her family is being denied a once-in-a-lifetime milestone in their daughter’s life,” Morris said. “No one should be forced to miss their graduation because of their gender.”The ACLU confirmed that the 17-year-old girl — listed in court papers only by her initials L.B. — would skip the Saturday ceremony for Harrison Central High School in Gulfport, about 160 miles (260 kilom...

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Ex-U.S. Rep. Mark Walker formally entered next year’s race for North Carolina governor on Saturday, saying that he’s best suited to win the seat that has eluded Republicans for much of the past three decades, by attracting a diverse set of voters in the closely divided state. Walker, a former Baptist pastor who rode the Tea Party wave to three terms in Congress, made the announcement to a crowd of 300 at a church in Kernersville. If elected, he said he would provide a bulwark to federal policy intrusions, promote educational opportunity and economic freedom, and protect families and children on cultural issues. He said he had a history, in both the pulpit and in Congress, of building bridges with unaffiliated and Democratic voters. He’s been known for his efforts to work with minority groups, particularly on funding historically Black colleges. Black supporters were featured prominently at the announcement event.“You’re fearfully and wonderfully ...

Heat bring 2-0 lead over Celtics home to Miami as East finals resume on Sunday

Published Thu, 27 Feb 2025 06:06:27 GMT

MIAMI (AP) — Jimmy Butler is Miami’s leader this postseason in points, minutes, assists and steals per game. He’s the sommelier at team dinners. He’s the barista when it’s time for coffee. If all that wasn’t enough, he’s also the DJ.When music blares in the Heat locker room, Butler is almost always in charge. Could be gospel, could be Whitney Houston, could be Nickelback and — as it was after Miami’s 111-105 win in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals — it could be Morgan Wallen, whose song “Somebody’s Problem” has become a Heat anthem.Wallen’s song is not about basketball, though that’s completely irrelevant to the Heat. These days, Butler is Somebody’s Problem. In fact, he’s Everybody’s Problem. And the Boston Celtics are running out of time to find a solution.Game 3 of the East finals is Sunday night, with the eighth-seeded Heat leading 2-0 after stunning almost everyone but themselves by going into Boston and winning the first two games of the series — puttin...

WOLVERHAMPTON, England (AP) — Yerry Mina’s dramatic leveler at Wolverhampton earned Everton a valuable point in its fight for English Premier League survival on Saturday. The defender struck from close range in the ninth minute of second-half stoppage time to grab a 1-1 draw and give the Toffees hope after Hwang Hee-chan’s first-half goal for Wolves.Everton’s 69-year stay in the top-flight remains in doubt and Sean Dyche’s side could still find itself in the drop zone before next week’s finale.Leeds visits West Ham on Sunday before Leicester’s trip to Newcastle on Monday and victory for both would lift them above Everton. As it is, Everton sits two points above the bottom three ahead of the visit of Bournemouth next Sunday.Everton struggled for long spells and again lost Dominic Calvert-Lewin to injury. Calvert-Lewin, who came off in last week’s defeat to Manchester City with a groin problem, limped off in first-half stoppage time.It will spawn a nervous Goodison Park, whi...
