The Twin Cities — including visitors to the Minnesota State Fair — are going to be sweltering this weekend, which will flirt with 100 degrees on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. The first day of meteorological fall (Sept.1 through Nov. 30) began with a vengeance Friday with a high of 89 in the Twin Cities. It’s expected to only get hotter as the Labor Day weekend goes on and the State Fair concludes on Monday.According to the NWS, the heat wave will peak Sunday afternoon with some areas of southern Minnesota possibly hitting 101.If it soars into the triple digits in the Twin Cities, it will be the first time that’s happened in September since Sept. 10, 1931, when it hit 104 in the midst of the Dust Bowl, according to the NWS.That was also the last — and only — 100-degree day at the 164-year-old State Fair. The second-highest temperature ever recorded during the Fair was 99, also notched in 1931 but two days earlier.Fairgoers haven...NYS DEC takes part in 46Climbs to raise money for suicide prevention

FORT WORTH, Texas — Even the irony is bigger in Texas. Nor was any of it lost on Rick George, who acknowledged that while he was kibitzing and black-slapping with Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark like an old college pal, the Pac-12 Conference woke up Friday to find itself the Pac-2.“I mean, certainly there is (some feelings),” the CU athletic director said following a news conference with Buffs chancellor Phil DiStefano, Yormark and TCU officials at swanky Amon G. Carter Stadium. “You know, I hate where some of my peers are and what their options may or may not be. It’s tough. But again, we had to stay focused on what was best for us. And you never know what dominoes are going to fall when you do that.”The final domino for the Pac-12 as we know it fell in the morning, when the Atlantic Coast Conference defied geography and logic, those nefarious arch-enemies of television executives and college presidents, by welcoming Stanford, Cal and SMU into the family. The Cardinal and Golden B...Sale closed in Milpitas: $1.6 million for a three-bedroom home

SAN DIEGO — In one corner of the Giants’ clubhouse here, Keaton Winn took a seat in front of the fresh No. 67 jersey hanging in his locker. A little while later, Tristan Beck, clearly not a starter who keeps to himself before taking the ball, came over and started to chat. Taking a break from strumming a guitar shockingly well, Ryan Walker made it a threesome. And before long, Kyle Harrison had joined them, too.Pitching coach Andrew Bailey walked past and couldn’t help but notice the assembly of young arms.“Wow! Look at this pow-wow,” he said, maybe including a word not fit to print.Between Walker, the opener extraordinaire; Beck, who made his second straight start Friday against the Padres; Harrison, who has lived up to the billing as a top prospect; and Winn, who was one of two September call-ups, the Giants will be looking to four rookies to take down meaningful innings this month.Entering the final month of the season, the Giants are also closer than any ...NASA orbiter spots likely crash crater from Russian craft

By Ashley Strickland | CNNA new crater has appeared on the moon, and it was likely created when Russia’s uncrewed Luna 25 mission crashed into the lunar surface.Images taken by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and released by the agency on Thursday reveal the fresh crater. The Luna 25 spacecraft, Russia’s first lunar lander in 47 years, launched on August 10 and was expected to land near the lunar south pole a couple of weeks later. But communication with the spacecraft was disrupted and Roscosmos, Russia’s space agency, reported an “emergency situation” occurred while Luna 25 tried to enter a pre-landing lunar orbit on August 19.Officials at Roscosmos later said engine failure was the likely cause of the crash. The agency shared an estimate of the impact point on August 21, which allowed members of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter team to send commands to the spacecraft the following day to take images of the site. The orbiter took images during a four-hour period on August 24, reve...Perrine Delacour holds onto Portland Classic lead with another bogey-free round

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Perrine Delacour held onto the Portland Classic lead Friday with another bogey-free round at Columbia Edgewater, shooting a 5-under 67 in perfect conditions a day after opening with a 63 in the rain.“You had to adjust for the pins, especially on the wedges,” Delacour said. “But it was definitely nicer. I mean, even though the bag is still wet from yesterday, but it was definitely nicer to be in shorts and polos instead of rain gear.”Winless on the LPGA Tour, the 29-year-old Frenchwoman took a one-stroke lead over Linn Grant into the weekend on the tree-lined layout just south of the Columbia River.“I just kept patient,” Delacour said. “I mean, of course, coming from a leader on the first day, shooting 9 under, you know you’re not going to shoot twice 9 under.”Delacour has five top-10s in 11 seasons on the LPGA Tour, with her career best a third-place finish in the 2020 Women’s Australian Open. “I’m the kind of person to overthink,” Delacour said. “So, the goal ...Coco Gauff comes back to win at the US Open and set up a match against Caroline Wozniacki

NEW YORK (AP) — Things were not going well for Coco Gauff at the U.S. Open on Friday night. Her shots were off. She was struggling to hold serve. She dropped a set. All the while, Gauff was talking to her coaches, Brad Gilbert and Pere Riba. Talking to herself. Slapping her thigh or putting her palm to her face. And when the No. 6-seeded Gauff needed to lift her game, when she needed to get headed in the right direction before it was too late, she did just that. Did she ever. Asking for more noise from the partisan fans at Arthur Ashe stadium — and, naturally, getting it — Gauff grabbed the last 10 games for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory over No. 32 Elise Mertens to reach the fourth round at Flushing Meadows.“The energy today definitely helped me. I felt you guys,” said Gauff, a 19-year-old from Florida. “I played every point my hardest.”The 2022 French Open runner-up heard plenty of loud support from the crowd as she turned things around and won for the 14th time in her past 15 matches, al...Latest news
