'When there's a large fire it's everybody's problem': Fire coordination happening across Central Texas

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- With destructive fires popping up in all corners of Central Texas this week, from Hays County to Cedar Park to east Austin, Travis County Emergency Services Districts said they're constantly coordinating among themselves and those surrounding counties to make sure resources are in the right place. "It's not just Travis County, we're doing Hays County, Williamson County, and all the surrounding. When there's a large fire it's everybody's problem," Travis County Fire Chief Robert Abbott told commissioners Tuesday. AUSTIN (KXAN) — Fans will be able to see the Texas men's basketball team quite a bit during its nonconference schedule this upcoming season.The Longhorns announced their nonconference schedule Thursday and will play nine of 13 games at Moody Center. Texas will open the season Nov. 6 against Incarnate Word. ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Some local teenagers were recognized for their work with the Albany Police Department this summer. A graduation ceremony was held on Thursday for the 13 members of the department's cadet program.The cadets take part in team building activities and work with police officers while earning part-time pay. ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The CDTA is changing its on-demand, curb-to-curb service known as FLEX. Starting on Monday, August 14, the service areas in Latham, Colonie and Guilderland will be condensed, and walk-up rides will be discontinued. Starting on September 3, FLEX service will be expanded in Saratoga County to include the village of Stillwater. It currently covers parts of Clifton Park, Halfmoon and Mechanicville.The CDTA is also adjusting how customers can schedule rides. Booking must be done through the Navigator app beginning on Monday. The app can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play, and customers will need to create an account.The CDTA said FLEX has provided nearly 90,000 rides over the past year. GOETZVILLE, Mich. (AP) — A standoff between law enforcement and a suspect in Michigan's Upper Peninsula ended with the suspect dead and a deputy U.S. marshal injured, authorities said Thursday.The U.S. Marshals Special Operations Group was trying to serve arrest warrants for Lindsey and Giovanni McNab, a married couple, at a home in Goetzville, Michigan, when Giovanni McNab opened fire and injured a deputy marshal Wednesday morning, the Marshals Service said in a news release.The couple was wanted out of Christian County, Missouri, for abduction and parental kidnapping. After Lindsey McNab was arrested earlier Wednesday, Giovanni McNab barricaded himself with two abducted minor children inside the Goetzville residence at the eastern end of the Upper Peninsula, the news release said.The standoff ended Wednesday night when members of a tactical unit approached the home and found Giovanni McNab dead, the news release said. A longtime DJ was shot and killed in Denver while working as a security guard at a strip club.Jason Perry, 46, died at the scene when he was shot in the 200 block of South Federal Boulevard on Tuesday night, according to the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner.“He was a DJ and he doubled as a security guard,” said Mary Dann McNamee, Perry’s aunt who lives in California.Perry was working security at Dandy Dan’s Gentleman’s Club on Tuesday.Perry enjoyed his DJ work because it allowed him to entertain a wide array of people, McNamee said. As the deadly wildfires on the Hawaiian island of Maui continue its destruction while claiming at least 53 lives by Thursday, one man recalls his family’s terrifying experience as the wildfire exploded.The fire began Tuesday and took the island by surprise, racing through parched growth and neighborhoods in the historic town of Lahaina, a tourist destination that dates to the 1700s and is the biggest community on the island’s west side.Jonathan Melikidse had no idea whether his wife and children were alive. During a frantic last phone call with his family where his wife was running from the flames, the line suddenly went dead.
